Scientists have decoded the genome of an intestinal parasite that causes hookworm, an illness that afflicts an estimated 700 million of the world’s poor. The parasitic worm lives in the soil and enters the body through the feet. By feeding on victims’ blood, the worms cause anemia and, in children, stunted growth and learning problems.

A major commitment by Donald Jubel (BS ’73) to honor his late parents will provide the impetus for the next phase of physical expansion for the School of Engineering. The new building also will be a center for multidisciplinary research to address challenges in industries such as energy and aerospace. Shown (at right) are Karen and Donald Jubel.
